Museum of Illusions I / II
Miao Jing & Liu Chang Dual Exhibition Project
2018 – 2020
A continuously evolving exhibition project, Museum of Illusions takes "collection" as its vessel and "imaginary growth" as its thread, unfolding across different cities and spaces.
Museum of Illusions I
The Mix-Place, Shanghai, May 2018
In May 2018, Museum of Illusions first manifested at The Mix-Place in Shanghai. The exhibition featured the Cabinet sound-video installation series created by Miao Jing in collaboration with musician Jason Hou—drawers of a traditional Chinese medicine cabinet opening sequentially, revealing imagery of ginseng, cocklebur fruit, cordyceps, and other traditional herbs, constructing an immersive viewing space.
Also presented was the online museum "Museum of Illusions," created in collaboration with Franklin Zhu—a virtual roaming space allowing viewers unable to visit in person to wander through the exhibition via the cloud. This dual presentation—physical and virtual—extended the boundaries of "collection" from physical space into the digital realm.
Museum of Illusions II
LIVIN Lifestyle Store, Chongqing, 2018
Later that year, Museum of Illusions II manifested again at Li Yi Wu Lifestyle Store in Chongqing. This iteration deeply integrated with the architectural space, presenting works by both Miao Jing and Liu Chang:
Miao Jing's Transition sound-video installation drew on Buddhist concepts of reincarnation, transforming elements of ancient Chinese architecture into dynamic sculptures that rotate toward different doors and paths in constant equilibrium. Liu Chang presented core works from her Flickering Existence series: Random Walker – Dripping and the eponymous portraiture artist's book.
Special Presentation of Random Walker – Dripping
This marked the first time Random Walker – Dripping was integrated with furniture design. Li Yi Wu's designers created a custom serrated wooden frame for the interactive installation—the warmth of time left by wood grain enveloping the entire dynamic portraiture work. Algorithmic brushstrokes flowed and dripped across the screen, surrounded by the warmth of wood; digital and natural, contemporary and traditional, quietly encountering one another.
Reappearance of Flickering Existence Artist's Book
The Flickering Existence portraiture artist's book reappeared for the first time since Liu Chang's 2016 solo exhibition Code is Beautiful at Fou Gallery, New York. The book collected "portraits" left by friends who participated in the work—moments in 2016 New York when they paused before cameras and co-created with algorithms. Turning the pages, memory溯回 to New York four years prior; those flickering existences reawakened.
Inside Time: Monodrama of Time
2020
In 2020, during the pandemic.
Random Walker drifted through space like a ghost, performing a monodrama about time in a world grown silent and still. No audience present; empty before the camera. Yet the algorithm continued running, brushstrokes continued flowing—no longer depicting human portraits, but tracing the shape of time itself. That year, the world paused. The work continued.
About the Museum of Illusions
"Collection"指向 gathering and display; "Illusions"指向 imagination and growth. In this ongoing project, Miao Jing and Liu Chang respond in their own ways to the same proposition: when traditional natural history encounters the digital age, when physical space extends into virtual networks, when presence and absence continually alternate—what do we collect? What do we display? How do we imagine a world in the process of becoming?
